My First Time in Montego Bay, Jamaica

My First Time in Montego Bay, Jamaica

For Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. weekend, I took a trip to Montego Bay, Jamaica. I flew on Southwest Airlines into Sangster Airport on early Friday afternoon, where it was very sunny. Once I landed, I took a 10-minute taxi ride to the resort RIU Montego Bay, where I checked in at 1:45 p.m. and wait until 3 p.m. for my room to be available.

Typically, check-in time is universally 3 p.m. So meanwhile, I was able to book two different excursions during my stay, one was snorkeling and the other was going to see the sunset at Rick’s Cafe in Negril.

When my room was available, I returned back to the front desk and was provided sets of keys to set down my bags and wait for the bellman to bring up my luggage. After I settled in, I went to the lunch buffet at the Mahoe. The buffet contained a variety of choices from Jamaican dishes to Italian Food, such as pizza and pasta to Mexican Tacos and Nachos to American dishes from hamburgers and sandwiches to a salad bar and more. The outdoor scenery was nice, however, there is a lot of upgrading that needs to be done at RIU Montego Bay

      .

The cons about this hotel were that everything was super dated, the sheets were a bit sticky, the room was not refreshing meaning the ac once you turn it off the room smells dewy, the jacuzzi in the spa was out of order, my toilet was clogged and we contacted the front desk to assist us with the blow dryer, but they took too long to show up.

The next day, we got up early around 6 a.m. to shower and get dressed for breakfast before we went on our bus for the excursion booked. The bus arrived around 9:30 am and we headed to a place called “The Reef Club”. We hopped onto a catamaran which sailed the ocean to go snorkeling.

While onboard, I had a yummy lemon juice and had my EOS Canon to snap some shots. As I got onto the net part of the front of the boat to take pictures, the waves began to be rough and intense, causing me to be nauseous. I’ve been on boats and ships before and never have I experienced what I have experienced. I had to force myself to throw up and then after the catamaran stopped for everyone to go snorkeling, I had to immediately run to the restroom and let it out. So there was my chance to snorkel which I was super bummed about.

After everyone got back from snorkeling, we headed to Margaritaville, where I had to order a meal too and have a drink to refuel. We were allotted 30 minutes at Margaritaville, so I was able to enjoy the view and watch people go down the slide into the water and play with the water amenities.

Once the time was up, we got back onto the catamaran and returned back to the Reef Club, where our bus was awaiting us to take us back to our hotel. When we arrived back at the hotel, I had to go lie down and rest for a bit. Then, after an hour I showered and walked to the beach to relax.

Later that evening, we went to dinner at the Steak House, which was a La Carte. The food was pretty decent, but the service was lacked. There were arrangments for a birthday surprise and singing “Happy Birthday” to an individual at my table, and that was an epic failure.

The next day, we had most of the morning to ourselves after breakfast and then around 1 p.m. we got ready for our bus to pick us up to take us to “Rick’s Cafe” in Negril. The drive was about 2 hours, so you know I had to take a nap and we made a stop at a souvenir shop to purchase littles gifts to bring back home.

Once we wrapped up our shopping, we got back onto the road to go to ‘Rick’s Cafe Live” was is famous for the amazing sunset view and diving from the cliff. The question is, did I dive off the cliff, no, I did not.

We sat to face the ocean where the sunset appears at 5:45 p.m. so, in the meantime, my mom and I had a drink, Pina Colada and Strawberry Daiquiri along with a grilled lobster, which was so delicious. Then it began to rain on and off, and then it began to rain harder so we weren’t able to view the sunset.

We ended up leaving and heading back for an hour and forty-five-minute ride to the hotel. The weather wasn’t pretty driving back.

When we arrived back at our hotel, we went to dinner and then went back to our room to get ready to pack up for our flight the next day! There is so much to do in Jamaica and next time I plan to schedule what I want to do and of course, I have to go snorkeling next time around!

The very next morning, we got up around 6 a.m. to get dressed for breakfast and request our luggage to be picked up by the bellman. after we checked out and grabbed some extra souvenirs, we got onto a shuttle and headed to the hotel to return back home. The service at the airport ran smoothly.
